Austevoll - coastal culture
Austevoll is a thriving coastal community which generates a great deal of wealth within fishing, fish farming, industry and offshore activities. Coastal culture includes both the old and the new and Austevoll offers a great deal of both. There are charming boathouses and a pleasant harbour milieu, large sea houses where fishing boats are equipped, all kinds of boats, small farms, coastal scenery, fishing, beacons and lots more to be experienced from the open road or from the sea either in your own boat or as a passenger on a car ferry or fast ferry.
Kystlaget (the Coast Society)
The Coast Society in Austevoll takes care of old boats and houses. It was founded in 1992. Some of the things they have restored include "The Mill" in Vinnesvågen which was in operation from 1928 to 1952. The Mill is also an oar repair workshop for people in open boats. Contact person Odd Engelsen, tel: 99516998 (NOK 50 per night for accommodation). The Coast Society had a sixareen built in 1994 which was named "Bregdø". It gets used for races and for sailing. They also have the traditional old wooden gableboat "Notmann" which was built in Herand in Hardanger in 1916. The society has owned it for 12 years. "Notmann" sails from Bekkjarvik every Thursday at 5 pm during the season (contact Helge Johan Skår, tel: 56 18 00 78)
